Description of the itinerary
A unique way to discover the Necropolis of Pantalica, this excursion to visit one of the most fascinating UNESCO sites of Sicily is the perfect blend of nature and history.
The territory of Pantalica is a prehistoric site of great importance, as it is among the largest preserved sites in Europe and dates back to the late Bronze Age (XIII-VIII a.C.). It covers about 80 hectares and is bordered by two large quarries through which the Cavagrande rivers flow (Calcinara to the north, and Anapo to the south). Along the canyons excavated by the two rivers are magnificent features: over 4000 tombs which are dug right into the rock, and preserved Byzantine churches, all hidden in the lush and varied river vegetation.
This tour includes a medium-difficulty trek along some of the many paths branching off into the reserve, to explore the abundant archaeological evidence of the time period.
Natural caves abound here, and we will see the huge entrance of the largest of them all: the majestic Cave of the Bats.
From these paths, we can also take in beautiful views of the Anapo and Calcinara river gorges. As we descend towards the valley, we will get up close with the cold waters of the two rivers, which flow through the luxuriant vegetation of the Nature Reserve and occasionally form pools of pure and clear water. Here you can cool off after the walk, or swim if it is summertime.

- A good attitude and a great respect for nature
Requirements

We strongly advise those who are not in good health to refrain from attending the walking excursions, especially those suffering from cardioid or respiratory diseases. For those who fall into this category, or otherwise experience limited mobility, or simply wish to rest their tired feet from all the sightseeing they’ve already done, we can offer a tour entirely by car.
